In a world where talking animals co-existed with humans, a boy named Ash Ketchum lived with his mother, Delia, in a small house in Pallet Town.  Ash often helped with the chores around the house, and though his intentions were good he usually ended up making a bigger mess.
“Ash,” Delia called out to her son. “Have you finished folding the laundry?”
“Yeah, mom!” Ash responded.
He was watching a Pokémon league battle of his small television, and he didn’t hear the sound of his mother’s footsteps coming up the stairs to his bedroom door.
“Ash!” Delia shouted as she opened to door.  Ash responded with a short scream and a tumble from his bed to the floor.  “I asked if you folded the laundry.”
“I did, Mom!” said Ash.
“Then how do you explain this, young man?”
Delia held out a basket of shirts and pants, all of which were piled in a mess of imprecise folds.
“But mom, you know I don’t know how to fold clothes neatly.”
She was about scold him for his lack of effort when the phone down stairs rang.  Delia went to answered the phone.  Ash came down stairs to listen just as Delia hung up the phone.
“Who was that, mom?” Ash inquired.
“That was Professor Oak.  He has a favor to ask and he wants you to go over to his lab right away.”
Without a second thought, Ash ran out the door and over to Professor Oak’s lab.  Professor Oak stood on the front yard waiting for him.
“I’m here, Professor!” said Ash.
“Ah, Ash!  Thank you for coming,” Oak responded.
“What’s this favor you want me to do?”
Oak handed Ask a green and white Poke’ ball.
“I need you go into Viridian City and exchange this Milktank at the Pokémon center.  Professor Elm wants to exchange a shiny Pokémon for it.”
“Why can’t you do the exchange it here, Professor?”
“I’m afraid my PC has caught a virus, and it will take me all day to debug it.  We don’t want the Pokémon to fall ill upon arrival.”
“No, I suppose not, Professor Oak.  You can count on me!”

A rusty truck was moving down the path of Route 1 towards Pallet Town.  Alex, a humanoid black panther, was at the steering while Marty, a humanoid lynx, was singing along to a jaunty tune on the radio.
“Just think, Alex,” Marty spoke as soon as the song ended, “our own business in making and selling metal artwork.”
“In a small town like Pallet?” Alex asked.  “Are you sure that’s good for business?”
“Even big name companies had to start somewhere.”
“It would make more sense to start in a more localized city like Saffron.”
“We make enough profit here in Pallet, we move on to the other cities and finally we make it big in Saffron.   Trust me; I thought this whole thing out.”
“That’s what I’m afraid of.”
“WATCH OUT!!!” Marty screamed.
Alex slammed on the breaks as the truck came to an abrupt stop right in front of Ash.   Ash jumped off to the side of the road, landing on the seat of his pants.  Alex and Marty got out of the truck and ran over to him.
“You okay, kid?” Alex asked as he helped Ash back up on his feet.
“Yeah, I’m okay,” Ash replied.
“You should really watch out for oncoming traffic.”
“Sorry.  We don’t get much traffic around here.”
“What’s a kid doing all by himself this far out anyway?” Marty asked.
“I’m on my way to Viridian City.”
“What a coincidence!  We just came from Viridian.  We can give you a ride there.”
“Great!” Ash said excitedly.
“Hold on!” said Alex. “I don’t think it’s wise to pick up hitch hikers.”
“I don’t see a knapsack on the kid,” Marty responded.  “We give him a ride and we bring him back to Pallet, no harm no foul.”
“I also don’t think it’s wise to accept rides from strangers.”
“I’m Ash Ketchum,” said Ash.
“I’m Marty Kalman,” said Marty with a smile and a handshake, “and this is Alexander Allister.  See, Alex!  Now we’re no longer strangers, and it’s not wise to leave a kid unattended in the middle of the road.”
“Alright,” Alex sighed. “Let’s go.”
Marty, Ash and Alex got back into the truck and drove back up the road.  They arrived in Viridian City, and Ash made his way to the Pokémon center.  While Alex and Marty took the opportunity to fill up the gas tank of their truck, Ash finished up trading the Miltank for the shiny Pokémon.  On his way out, Ash was stopped by J. Worthington Foulfellow, an anthro fox in torn gentlemen’s garbs, and his assistant Gideon, a mute anthro cat.
“Well, well, what do have we here, Gideon?” Foulfellow said in a cunning tone.
“Who?  Me?” said Ash confusedly.
Gideon simply nodded with a grin while FoulFellow continue to speak.
“You look like a boy who loves adventure.”
“You bet!  When I turn ten years old, I’m gonna go on lots of big adventures and become the greatest Pokémon master!”
“Oh my!  I can tell you’re a big dreamer,” FoulFellow said while putting his arm around Ash’s shoulder,” and big dreamers go to places filled with adventure and treasures beyond their wildest dreams.  Fortunately for you, my young friend, I can help you get there…for a price of course.”
“Really?  What is the price?” Ash asked.
“For that Pokémon in your hand, I’ll give you this bag filled with magic beans.”
“Magic beans?” Ash chuckled in disbelief.  “I’m not that stupid.  Besides, I promised to get this Pokémon to Professor Oak.
“But that’s the best thing about these beans.  They can take you to the most rare and legendary Pokémon of all!”
‘They can?  How do they work?”
“Why it’s very simple.  All you do is plant them into the soil, and over night they will rise up to the clouds.  There you will find exactly what you are looking for.”
Ash thought long and hard.  Perhaps bringing back a rare legendary Pokemon would make Professor Oak so proud, and it would make his mother proud to know he did an extraordinary good deed.   So with that in mind, he willingly handed over the Poke’ ball to Foulfellow in exchange for the bag of magic beans.  As soon as Foulfellow and Gideon left, Marty and Alex pulled up in their truck in front of the Pokémon center.
“You got what you needed, Ash?” asked Alex.
“I sure did!” Ash said with glee.
“Then let’s head on back to Pallet town,” Marty exclaimed.
A new take on an old crossover retelling the story of "Jack and the Beanstalk."
